How Far Have We come?
Short Story-
How far have we come?
Oh – about 20 minutes I should think.
Ha ha. I meant how far in distance?
Maybe half a mile or so.
Isn't it wonderful once the engine is cut.
You're right there.
We used to sail out here when we were young.
I'll never be young again.
Neither will I.
But then we never had time to grow old, did we? How did we manage to pull off so many deals?
Due diligence old chum, due diligence.
I think we presented them with so many facts, they were drowning in paperwork.
Nobody believed that two young guys could run rings around international organisations!
We did it though.
We did indeed.
Those were the days.
Do you think we should be making a move?
I guess so.
Can you start the engine?
I'm trying, can't you hear it cranking?
You know my hearing is not what it was.
It won't fire up.
Keep trying.
There's something wrong, can you smell burning?
What is it?
There's a wire shorting out, or a bad contact.
Can you fix it?
I'll try, where's the toolkit?
Up for'ard.
There's no toolkit here.
Bugger. I must've left it in the yard.
The weather is turning, maybe we should set off a flare?
I hate asking for help.
Me too, I'll try and fix it using my knife, if I can get the cover off, and undo the connection, maybe strip the cable back and reconnect it.
It's no good, I can see where it shorted out - must've drained the battery flat. Let off a flare, and let's hope they get here before we drift onto the rocks.
Bad news.
Don't tell me the flare won't go off.
I won't tell you then.
So, once again we're in a bit of a pickle?
Looks like it.
How do you suggest we tackle this one?
I'm working on it.
Do you feel a sudden chill?
I do, and the light is changing.
That's not just a squall.
Hold on, there's a big one coming.
I'm trying to.
Those waves look enormous.
SILENCE
Are you okay?
I am, what about you?
No need to worry about me.
That's weird, I don't remember how we got through that storm, but here we are - blue sky, warm and dry, calm sea.
You're right. Funny thing is, all the pain has gone, I can move my legs no trouble.
It's like I'm dreaming - I can hear gulls and see the coast - plain as day.....
END.
